More steps do not always mean more complexity. A scheduling assistant can make room for one decision at a time.
One product. Different ways in.
Auora is a B2B2C healthcare product for hospital groups, clinics, specialists and patients. Scheduling had to accommodate a wide range of services and the people managing them.
Patients brought different ages, levels of confidence with technology, devices and connections. A significant portion used health insurance plans or public healthcare services. Administrators needed denser tools, while patients and specialists needed mobile access.
As the sole Product Designer, I worked on research, usability testing, UX and visual design across desktop, mobile and self-service kiosks.
Let the test change the design.
Testing with real users revealed difficulties with conventional search for older users. Making every filter available at once was not enough to make the scheduling task approachable.
I designed a step-by-step scheduling assistant that followed the rhythm of a conversation with a receptionist. Instead of presenting every choice together, the flow focused on one decision at a time.
The intention was to reduce the complexity of each decision, rather than minimise the number of screens at any cost.
A flow depends on what sits behind it.
Integration with existing hospital and specialist calendars required more effort than anticipated. The project paused to focus on the back-end architecture.
The prototypes supported the technical team in exploring that integration early. Designing the interface also helped make the dependencies behind the scheduling experience tangible.
